Mohegan Lake Improvement District
The
Mohegan Lake Improvement District was
established in 1975, by joint action
of the Town Boards of Yorktown and
Cortlandt. Located in Northern
Westchester County, New York, the Lake
District manages 105-acre Lake
Mohegan. The lake has become
increasingly prone to algae blooms,
and local residents used copper
sulfate to "manage" the lake for many
years. About a mile long, the lake was
also used for power boating, sail
boating, swimming, fishing and ice
skating. After their years of hard
work to raise
funds, residents realized they needed
a more lasting organization to collect
money and oversee the lake. They
petitioned the Towns of Yorktown and
Cortlandt, which swiftly approved the
creation of the Mohegan Lake
Improvement District under Article 12
of the Town Law of the State of New
York.
The Lake District is roughly
delineated to include all properties
having "lake rights" to this private
lake. It's hardly "private," however -
with some 1,500 households now
comprising the District. Currently the
District raises about $48,000/year
in taxes (approx $30 per household) to
manage the lake. The District is
managed by a group of volunteers, who
meet the second Wednesday each month
during much of the year. Yorktown is a town in Westchester
County, New York, in the suburbs
of New York about 38 miles north of
midtown Manhattan. The town lies on
the north border of Westchester
county. The population was 36,318 at
the 2000 census.
The Jefferson Valley Mall, in the
hamlet of Jefferson Valley, is home to
approximately 250 stores, including
Sears, Macy*s, H&M, Aéropostale,
American Eagle, Hollister, Charlotte
Russe, Forever 21, Gamestop and Foot
Locker. The mall opened in 1983.
Yorktown Heights is home to the
Guiding Eyes for the Blind
headquarters, located on Granite
Springs Road. Yorktown is also the
home of the IBM Thomas J. Watson
Research Center,
designed
by the well-known Finnish-American
architect Eero Saarinen.
The town also hosts the yearly
Greasestock festival at the 18th
century history landmark Peter Pratt's
Inn, a showcase of alternative fuel
vehicles.
Yorktown once had five stations along
the New York and Putnam Railroad
Kitchawan, Croton Lake, Croton
Heights, Yorktown Heights and
Amawalk.
The railroad failed, was purchased by
the New York Central, and finally
abandoned. The old right of way is now
part of North County Trailway which
runs north as far as Carmel, New York.
There is currently no rail service in
Yorktown,
but the stations of Croton-Harmon,
Mount Kisco,
Pleasantville or Cortlandt are 15–20
minutes away.* Wikipedia Info
